Almost every state utilizes continuing education for the various fields of professional licensure. This requirement is expected of each licensed professional. This is especially true for professional counselors. The requirements for counselors will vary from state to state in regards to the number of CEUs needed and where they can obtain these units. The one common denominator is that continuing education is mandated.
Not surprisingly, a large number of professional counselors will rush through their continuing education at the last minute in order to just fulfill their state board requirements. However, there are those that desire to take their expertise to a new level and use this board imposed expectation to progress their professional development. Are you in one of these two camps or somewhere in between?
Wanting to just "get through it" is common and not necessarily bad. Everyone's schedule is getting more and more hectic over time. Insurance claims are becomming more difficult to get authorized and paid, one'es clientele is constantly changing and growing, and one's own personal time and family needs are constantly pressing. These elements can box one in, to where they are going through the motions in other areas like their continuing education. So, now you are at a crossroads. Do you stay on the path of least resistance and just get through it, or do you take the road less traveled and advance your skill set?
If you decide you want more out of your career, here are some other great questions to ask yourself:
"What skills am I presently deficient in?"
"Where could I be lacking in another year or two if I don't grow?"
"Are there areas of study that are of personal interest that can add to my career?"
"Where do I want my practice to be in 5, 10, 15 years from now?"
"What do I need to do in order to see that happen?" (ie: areas of growth, classes to take, etc)
So, if you now know that you are one of those that chooses to see their continuing education requirement as an opportunity for growth, your options have just been blown wide open. You will find that there are plenty of courses to choose from that pertain to whatever field of study you are seeking, from the everyday to the more niche. The internet has made these options more readily available and easier to acquire than ever before.
If you are serious about growing in your professional life, you shouldn't wait until the final days of your license renewal period. Think ahead of where you want to be at the end of the next year or two. Determine what skill sets need further development and which ones are completely nonexistent. Then start working toward making your plans and goals a reality. Don't let your continuing education be just another task to check off the list, but a springboard to a more enriching career.
